Manhattan, watches as his comrade-in-arms, the Comedian, murders a pregnant woman before his eyes. These are real people on the page and so is their rage, their feelings of frustration, sexual or otherwise, their inadequacies, and erraticism laid on display for all to see. When you take into consideration costumed heroes such as Superman, Spider-Man, and, even to an extent Batman, there’s always a clear line between the good and the bad.
It’s strange to think of the Watchmen as a comic book, something so commonly associated with stark, black-and-white (heh) themes of good and evil. Watchmen #2 delves deeper into the depravity of the superhero psyche, dealing with the Comedian’s funeral and flashbacks involving each one of the Watchmen, from the failed assault on Silk Spectre by the Comedian to the successful murder of an unnamed, pregnant Vietnamese woman, also by the Comedian. But I got your number, see? And one of these days, the jokes gonna be on you… The Comedian, Watchmen #2
